I'd like to congratulates Dave Johnson for his successful jump from Sherpa to the MyComics Page. For the month of October Dave sent everyone that was visiting his website to Sherpa to show UPS just how big of a readership he gets- and it worked! So starting in early December, you can subscribe to Dog Complex via MyComicsPage. Congrats Dave- you really deserved it. www.dog-complex.com

Have you talked to any of these people as to how they "made the jump"? Another cartoonist who "recently" moved up the ranks is Frank Page, author of Bob the Squirrel, a very funny comic about a guy (Frank) and his squirrel.

MacMan,
I talk to most of the people that have made the jump on a daily basis. I probably talk to Dave Johnson of Dog Complex, Matt Bors of Idiot Box, and Dan Thompson of Lost Sheep the most.
I get the feeling that they don't know exactly what these ucomics people are looking for, other than a feature that they think will make them money. If you recall my July comic con seriies, you'll note that I asked my editor what it takes to make that jump. Unofortunately, he didn't know since the editors that choose the features for ucomics and the editors that choose the features for print are completely different. He guessed that criteria included good writing, a solid fanbase, and a feature that updates everyday. Obvsiously, the last "requirement" isn't really a requirement, since .blue only updates three times a week. Nonetheless, I know they are definitely interested in something that can sustain a large readership and that is of quality work.
That said, I have no idea how they measure something as subjective as "quality." I personally think that I produce consistently good work, so we'll see what happens in the next year or so.

I agree. What I don't understand is why they would take .blue instead of CLV. It hasn't been on Sherpa for nearly as long, it doesn't come out everyday, and it just isn't the kind of cartoon you just can't wait to see.

From what I understand, they were hoping that .blue would be great for cell phones. Like, you know how in Japan, people read manga on their cell phones? That's what they're hoping .blue is going to do here. They also like it b/c they think it can appeal to an international audience since it has no words.

I didn't know they did that. That's pretty cool. I have no idea why they think people would rather read comics on their phone, but that is definitely a cool idea.

Yeah it's pretty cool actually. The manga actually doesn't look half bad on cell phones. But then again, Japan is also really ahead of us (Americans) in terms of cell phone technology.
It's pretty common to see adults and children alike in Japan reading comics on their cell phone on the bullet trains.

Sounds like Dave decided not to accept the Uclick contract afterall- an opportunity came and he couldn't refuse, although it sounds like he was disappointed that he couldn't continue Dog Complex. You can read all about his decision on www.dog-comlex.comIt's a shame, but everyone is throwing him their support, and at least he knows that he has what it takes! Best of luck to Dave.

I don't know if anyone's seen it, but Dave's forum at Dog Compex has been hacked recently. It looks like if it doesn't get fixed, he's gonna drop the froum. What a shame...
